Senior leaders Mark Johnson, Rowan Keefe, and Nic Lendino set the tone for an ambitious season

2026 Captains Lead New Era

Valparaiso University has named three senior players as captains for the upcoming 2026 football season, entrusting them with the responsibility of guiding a squad eager to build on recent progress.

Mark Johnson, a defensive back who started all 12 games last year, brings a blend of on‑field intensity and off‑field dedication. His contributions to the community, including a bone‑marrow donation, earned him a spot on the 2026 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team and a Phil Steele Preseason All‑PFL Third Team nod.

Rowan Keefe, the redshirt senior quarterback, was recognized as the Most‑Improved Player and will now serve as one of the team’s leaders. He previously started nine of 12 games and has begun multiple contests in each of the last three seasons, providing steady experience under center.

Nic Lendino, a redshirt junior defensive back, adds another layer of depth to the leadership group. Last year he was named All‑PFL Honorable Mention and this preseason earned a spot on the All‑Conference Team, capping a career that culminated with the 2025 Defensive Player of the Year award.

The trio will be introduced at a media day press conference on Sunday afternoon, an event that will be streamed live on ValpoAthletics.com and feature head coach Andy Waddle alongside the captains.

The season kicks off with a home matchup against Lawrence Tech on August 29 at 1 p.m. at Brown Field, giving fans an early glimpse of the new‑look offense and defense.

Season tickets are now available through tickets.valpoathletics.com, allowing supporters to follow the team throughout its schedule.
