The University of New Mexico’s football program opened its fall camp this week, marking the first on‑field work under head coach Jason Eck. The early practices have already drawn attention for the amount of talent returning after offseason changes.
Quarterback Battle Takes Shape
Quarterback Jack Layne is out for the near future after a nagging elbow injury limited him during the spring, creating an opening for Oregon transfer Luke Moga to receive the first‑team reps. Moga will share snaps with James Laubstein, whose ability to throw on the run has been highlighted by coaches.
The competition for the starting quarterback role will continue over the next 24 practices, with Laubstein, Moga and other candidates rotating in the offense. Coaches have praised Laubstein’s mobility and decision‑making, while Moga brings experience from the Pac‑12.
Defensive end Brett Karhu and defensive back Azariah Levells have been cleared by a federal judge to resume their NCAA eligibility, giving the Lobos two proven pass‑rushers back in the lineup. Their presence is expected to bolster a defense that struggled for consistency last season.
On the line, redshirt junior Cole Millward has taken the majority of snaps at left tackle with the first‑team offense, while the unit also benefits from the return of four starters — Malik Aliane, Kaden Robnett, Jaymar Tasi and Tyler Lawrence. Lawrence earned the ‘Hammer of the Day’ award on day two for his performance.
Other standout performers during the first two practices included Massiah Mingo, DJ Darling, Jahmir Torres, Frankie Edwards III and Elijah Brody, who were all noted for their energy and execution on both sides of the ball.
The Lobos will hold public sessions on Friday from 3 to 5:30 p.m. and Sunday from 2:15 to 4:45 p.m., giving fans a chance to watch the competition unfold as the team finalizes its roster ahead of the upcoming season.
