The organization is contemplating a two‑person model that separates strategic oversight from day‑to‑day management, a setup that has proven effective with the Montreal Canadiens, where Jeff Gorton shapes long‑term direction while Kent Hughes handles operational details.
Jeff Greenberg, currently an assistant general manager with the Chicago Blackhawks and formerly the Tigers’ assistant GM, is among the front‑line candidates. His career spans stints with the Pittsburgh Pirates, MLB’s executive offices, the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Blackhawks, and he brings a law degree from Columbia as well as a hockey pedigree that includes captaining the University of Pennsylvania club team.
Team owner Chris Ilitch has voiced a clear ambition to boost the Red Wings’ analytics capabilities, a goal that aligns with Greenberg’s data‑driven reputation. Ilitch recently retained a law firm to compile a list of potential candidates, underscoring the seriousness of the search.
The move comes on the heels of Steve Yzerman’s exit from the Red Wings, a departure that has left a vacuum in the front office and intensified the need for fresh leadership.
