Archie Manning, the 77‑year‑old former Ole Miss quarterback, is slated to be immortalized with a bronze statue positioned just outside the Manning Center, the university’s football hub.
A Legend’s Legacy
Manning’s collegiate tenure from 1968 to 1970 under coach Johnny Vaught saw him become one of the most prolific offensive minds in school history, amassing 56 touchdowns and 5,576 yards of total offense, records that still stand.
His performance earned him a third‑place finish in the 1970 Heisman Trophy voting and a spot in the College Football Hall of Fame in 1989, and he was selected second overall by the New Orleans Saints in the 1971 NFL Draft.
Family Roots and Future
Beyond his playing days, Manning has remained a fixture in Oxford, helping run the Manning Passing Academy with his sons Peyton and Eli, while his grandson Arch Manning emerges as a top quarterback prospect at Texas and a Heisman contender.
The statue will mark the second time the university has erected a monument to a football great, following the movable bust of Chucky Mullins, a 1989 tragedy whose memory lives on in the tunnel before every home game.
