A youth baseball coach in Harford County was arrested this week after investigators uncovered a disturbing plan to solicit a minor through an online chat. The suspect, Robert 'Joe' Swarthout, now faces two felony counts of soliciting a minor.
Swarthout, 41, had been communicating with an undercover deputy whom he believed to be a 15‑year‑old boy. Using a messaging app, he exchanged messages that quickly turned flirtatious, prompting the deputy to alert law enforcement.
The operation was overseen by veteran journalist Chris Hansen, who helped direct the 'Takedown' sting that targeted online predators posing as teenagers. Hansen's involvement lent the operation a high‑profile presence, drawing attention to the hidden dangers lurking in digital spaces.
A Coordinated Sting
According to the Harford County Sheriff’s Office, Swarthout arranged to meet the decoy at a predetermined location. The meeting never materialized, as officers moved in to apprehend him before any encounter could occur.
Sheriff Jeff Gahler described the charges as 'deeply troubling' and emphasized that trusted community figures can pose a serious risk to youth. He urged parents, coaches and anyone working with children to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior.
