The sport that once lived in the shadows of tackle football is now carving out a vibrant presence across Northern Colorado, as new programs spring up and established teams sharpen their ambitions for the upcoming season.
At the forefront of this movement, Berthoud will field its very first flag football team this fall, joining longtime powerhouse Mountain View in a district that has become a hotbed for the fast‑paced, non‑contact variant.
Berthoud’s Inaugural Squad
Berthoud’s head coach, Blaine Voth, brings more than two decades of track coaching experience to the sidelines, a background that has shaped a roster built around speed and versatility.
Among the athletes answering that call is Sofia Sigg, the 2024 Class 3A track champion in the 200‑metre and 400‑metre events, who now leads a squad of multi‑sport standouts eager to translate their sprinting prowess to the field.
Key figures in the new Berthoud lineup include junior quarterback Jessa Senesac, who is still mastering the nuances of the position, and a cluster of talented skill players such as Grace Bauman, Amirah Botkin, Ava Wysock and Petra Zahourek‑Fredrick.
Mountain View’s Championship Pursuit
Across the district, Mountain View enters its third season with a roster that blends proven veterans and fresh talent, anchored by junior quarterback Keira Knowles, who amassed 3,012 yards and 44 touchdowns a year ago, and sophomore Lexi Dettloff, who contributed 1,967 yards and 27 scores.
Returning running back Riley Darcy, who overcame a mid‑season injury to finish the previous campaign, adds depth to a backfield that also features a strong supporting cast.
The schedule pits the two programs against each other early, with Mountain View opening the season on August 18 at Max Marr Stadium against Berthoud, while Berthoud’s debut is set for August 15 at Eagle Ridge Academy.
Both teams share a common goal: a return to the top of the Class 4A state ladder. After a disappointing finish last year, Mountain View has adopted the mantra “We set the standard,” a rallying cry that underscores its pursuit of another championship.
The expansion also marks a structural shift within the Thompson School District, which has become the first district north of Mountain View to support a second school‑based team, signaling broader institutional backing for the sport.
