Arkansas is entering the 2026 season with a puzzling question at wide receiver: who will emerge from a group of sixteen players vying for a limited number of spots in the two‑deep.
Coach Ryan Silverfield has said the staff is less concerned about who starts and more focused on ensuring the selected players are ready for the season opener on September 5 against North Alabama.
A crowded field
The first practice of preseason saw a nine‑man battle for the starting lineup, with names like CJ Brown, Chris Marshall and Jamari Hawkins taking the opening reps alongside the first‑team offense.
Meanwhile, Donovan Faupel, Antonio Jordan and Ismael Cisse were placed in the second unit, while Monte Harrison, Courtney Crutchfield and Jelani Watkins worked with the third team.
Offensive coordinator Tim Cramsey expects the competition to be trimmed to roughly seven or eight players by the first week of practice, a timeline that will be tested when full pads arrive on August 11.
The historical context adds pressure: in 2025, the four returning receivers combined for 157 catches, 2,177 yards and 14 touchdowns, with Faupel leading the group at New Mexico State with 61 receptions and 661 yards.
Brown, a Bentonville native, was the team’s top returning receiver last season, posting 319 yards and three scores, but the remaining twelve receivers managed only four catches and 76 yards collectively.
Freshmen and newcomers will have to prove themselves quickly, as the coaches stress preparation and mistake avoidance in the upcoming full‑contact drills.
