Louisville’s fall camp opened with a buzz of activity, as players took the field for the first time under a refreshed roster and a new coaching staff.
A Defensive Shift Under Ivey
Mark Ivey, the newly appointed defensive play‑caller, brings a track record of aggression and playmaking. His appointment marks the first time the Cardinals have a dedicated defensive coordinator in the role, and his experience includes guiding the ACC in sacks during the 2022 season.
Head coach Jeff Brohm did not shy away from the team’s lingering special‑teams woes, noting that kickoff coverage, extra‑point attempts and punting have been far from satisfactory. In response, the program added Rhode Island transfer Garth White to the roster, but Brohm’s frustration remains evident as the unit continues to struggle.
Among the offensive bright spots, Vanderbilt transfer Tre Richardson impressed with his speed during 7‑on‑7 drills. Brohm said the coaching staff intends to use Richardson both as a slot receiver and on the outside, aiming to exploit his playmaking instincts.
The defensive line also looks deeper than a year ago. Returners Clev Lubin and AJ Green, combined with portal signees Tyler Thompson and Demeco Kennedy, give the unit a blend of experience and fresh talent that could translate into a more consistent pass rush.
In the tight end room, the Cardinals can point to a group that includes Jaleel Skinner, Justyn Reid and true freshman Julius Miles, all of whom have drawn praise for their athleticism and route running.
Injuries have tempered optimism at running back, where Isaac Brown was sidelined and Lekhy Thompkins limited. Nevertheless, the coaching staff believes the position retains versatility and depth capable of handling a variety of game situations.
