Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire is charting a new offensive strategy for the 2026 season, one that leans heavily on depth and balance rather than relying on a handful of star receivers.
During preseason workouts the Red Raiders lined up six receivers on both the first and second units, including Micah Hudson, Donte Lee Jr., Coy Eakin, Jalen Jones, Kenny Johnson and Bryson Jones, signaling a deliberate effort to spread the ball and give every pass‑catcher meaningful snaps.
The coaching staff also expects a robust offensive line, projecting a top nine depth that features veterans such as Daniel Sill, Cash Cleveland and D'Anthis Upshaw, who provide continuity and experience up front.
A Rising Guard and a Resilient Backfield
Redshirt freshman Elias Gillen has emerged as the starting right guard, showing marked improvement in technique and athleticism, while Quinten Joyner’s return from knee surgery adds a fresh layer of competition at running back, provided he regains his pre‑injury form.
Versatility remains a cornerstone of the attack, with J'Koby Williams slated to operate in an all‑purpose ‘Joker’ role, capable of lining up at running back, in the slot or even as a decoy to keep defenses guessing.
Coach McGuire stresses that the team will play a full 16‑game schedule, making depth not just a luxury but a necessity to manage fatigue and maintain performance levels throughout the grind.
Reflecting on the previous season’s injury woes, McGuire is cautious about drawing direct comparisons, focusing instead on the progress made and the accountability he expects from each player.
