The University of Massachusetts baseball team concluded its road trip with a sweep by Miami University, dropping all three games in a tightly contested series that highlighted both the Minutemen’s offensive spark and the sting of narrowly missed opportunities.
Road Series Recap
UMass showed flashes of power in the final contest, plating three runs in the third inning and adding four more in the eighth, but a late rally fell short as the RedHawks held on for a slim victory.
The series opened with a four‑run first inning, sparked by Braden Sullivan’s two‑RBI grand slam to left‑center, while Gavin O’Brien’s solo homer in the second game gave the Minutemen their first tally before a flurry of runs between the fourth and sixth innings sealed a high‑scoring affair.
Pitching proved challenging for UMass, with starter Sam Perry working four innings and surrendering two runs, while relievers Brandon Wingenroth and Adam Merritt each absorbed losses after giving up five or more runs, though the staff logged 29 strikeouts across the weekend.
Despite the setbacks, several players turned in strong hitting performances; Vance Bonior and Ryan Kolben each collected three hits, and Reece McCarthy, Jack Beverly and Matt Travisano added two apiece, contributing to a collective effort that kept the team competitive.
The Minutemen now turn their attention to a final home series against Central Michigan, scheduled to begin on May 14 in Amherst, where they hope to finish the season on a positive note before heading into the offseason.
