The University Interscholastic League announced that Neil Searcy, head coach of the Gainesville (TX) football program, will be barred from all team activities for the entire 2026 season after an investigation revealed he violated offseason practice regulations.
During May, Searcy oversaw six one‑hour workouts in which athletes were allowed to wear helmets and shoulder pads — a practice expressly prohibited for Class 4A schools by UIL rules. The violations were uncovered by the district superintendent and subsequently self‑reported by Searcy.
As a consequence of the infractions, the team lost four preseason practice days scheduled for August 7‑11 and will also miss the planned scrimmage against Frisco Legacy Christian on August 13. The suspension also places Searcy on a three‑year probationary period.
A Program Struggling to Find Stability
Gainesville’s football squad endured a difficult previous season, finishing 1‑9 and being outscored 523‑144. The program now faces the added challenge of navigating the upcoming season without its longtime leader, as no replacement has been named yet.
Despite the sanctions, Searcy will continue to serve in his capacity as the district’s athletic director, a role that will keep him involved in the broader sports administration while he serves his suspension.
The team’s season opener is slated for August 28 against Bridgeport, but the absence of a head coach introduces uncertainty about preparation, morale, and overall direction as the new campaign begins.
