Rankings Take a Back Seat
The University of Florida’s Gators entered the 2026 campaign without a spot in the US LBM preseason Top 25 coaches poll, and even the broader “receiving votes” tally left them at 27th, while the SEC media and USA Today projections placed them ninth among conference rivals.
First‑year head coach Jon Sumrall has made it clear that he does not let external rankings dictate his preparation, instead leaning on his staff to shape the roster and game plan.
Defensive coordinator Brad White echoes the sentiment, saying the poll numbers are irrelevant and that the team’s focus is on executing on the field, especially on the defensive side of the ball.
Both coaches stress that the Gators will measure success by how quickly they can gel as a unit, by the effectiveness of their schemes, and by the execution of each play rather than by any preseason tally.
Defensive Outlook
White has outlined a scheme that prioritizes pressure on opposing quarterbacks and disciplined gap control, aiming to limit big plays early in the season.
The coordinator also noted that the defensive unit will rely on a mix of experienced veterans and promising newcomers, with an emphasis on continuity in practice reps.
Sumrall added that the offensive side will complement the defense by maintaining a balanced attack, but the overarching message from both leaders is that the team’s identity will be forged on the field, not on paper.
The season opener is slated for September 5, when Florida will host Florida Atlantic, a matchup that will serve as the first real test of the new coaching staff’s philosophy.
