What began as a club‑level experiment in the mid‑2000s has grown into a statewide varsity offering, thanks in large part to the Anchorage School District’s decision in 2005 to add the sport to meet Title IX gender‑equity mandates.
A new era for Alaska’s high school sports
The latest preseason rankings, released ahead of the 2025 season, place South Anchorage at the top of the state’s power list, followed closely by Wasilla, North Pole, Colony and Dimond. The rankings reflect a competitive field that has been sharpened by two decades of informal play and just two years of official sanctioning.
South Anchorage enters the new campaign with a 16‑5 record from the previous year and harbors championship aspirations. Coach Maya Hernandez says the team’s depth and experience give them a realistic shot at defending their title, but she cautions that the competition is tighter than ever.
North Pole’s twin sisters, Jade and Taimane Skipps, are generating particular buzz. The duo, who have already combined for over 30 touchdowns in the offseason, could be the catalyst that propels the North Pole team to a second straight championship.
Other contenders round out the top tier with solid résumés: Colony from Palmer boasts a 17‑9 record, Dimond from Anchorage sits at 16‑4, and West Anchorage holds a 12‑7 slate. Each squad brings a blend of seasoned veterans and emerging talent, promising a season full of tightly contested matchups.
