A seasoned veteran steps back into the role
Steve Piotrowski, a veteran ice‑hockey official with more than 40 years of collegiate experience, has been appointed NCAA secretary‑rules editor for both men’s and women’s hockey. The appointment, effective September 1, marks his return to a position he previously held from 2008 to 2019.
Piotrowski’s career spans over 1,300 Division I men’s games, 14 NCAA tournaments and six national championship finals. He previously served as coordinator of men’s ice‑hockey officials for the Big Ten Conference and as director of officials for the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, before which he worked as an on‑ice referee from 1983 to 2007.
His international credentials include selections by the International Ice Hockey Federation to officiate at world championships and junior tournaments. Piotrowski also played collegiate hockey at Ferris State University, giving him a player‑coach perspective that informs his approach to rule interpretation.
Emphasizing that rules are the foundation of competitive integrity, Piotrowski says his priority is to strengthen rule education and communication across all NCAA levels. He aims to ensure that players, coaches and officials share a clear understanding of the standards that govern the sport.
