Contract Details and Guarantees
Under the new deal, Mills will earn $1.789 million in the first year, with a guaranteed base of $1.4 million plus $314,000 for off‑court contributions and a $75,000 retention bonus. The guaranteed salary climbs each subsequent year, surpassing $2.3 million by the final year of the contract.
Performance incentives are tied to deep tournament runs, offering $100,000 for an NCAA championship and $25,000 for finishing in the top 40 of the final rankings. These clauses underscore the university’s ambition to compete at the national level.
A buyout provision protects Mills’ earnings if he is dismissed without cause during the first four years, guaranteeing full compensation, while a reduced 75 % payout applies only in the fifth year. This structure provides stability for both the coach and the program.
Athletic Director Kevin Saal praised Mills’ leadership, highlighting consistent improvement, regular postseason appearances, and the development of players both on and off the court. Saal emphasized that the contract aligns with the university’s long‑term vision for the basketball program.
