Florida Polytechnic University has made a landmark hire by appointing Dennis Hopson as the inaugural head coach of its brand‑new men’s basketball program. The university, located in Lakeland, Florida, is betting on Hopson’s championship pedigree and his ability to blend athletic ambition with academic rigor.
A Champion’s Journey
Hopson’s basketball résumé reads like a global odyssey. After winning an NBA title with the Chicago Bulls, he played professionally for the New Jersey Nets, Sacramento Kings and in leagues across the Philippines, Turkey, Israel, Venezuela and Spain. His coaching career has spanned the ABA’s Royal Knights, Northwood University, Bowling Green, and most recently Lourdes University, where his teams posted nearly 100 wins and a 99% graduation rate for student‑athletes.
Beyond the X’s and O’s, Hopson has articulated a set of six core values — family, integrity, balance, respect, attitude and leadership — that will shape every practice and off‑court interaction. He stresses that success is measured not only by wins but by the character and academic achievements of each player.

Athletic director Derek Lower praised the hire, saying Hopson is the ideal coach to launch the inaugural season and to set a standard for future squads.
