A 57‑year‑old youth basketball coach from Mill Valley was taken into custody in late July after authorities received a report that he had sexually abused a teenage girl under his supervision.
Charles Ramon Huff, who coached at the North Bay Basketball Academy, now faces three felony counts of lewd acts upon a minor, each accompanied by a special allegation that he was in a position of trust. Prosecutors say the abuse occurred on multiple occasions, including at the victim’s home while her parents were away.
Legal Proceedings and Custody Decision
The Marin County Superior Court, citing concerns that Huff might contact the victim, ordered that he remain jailed without bail. Judge Ahtossa Fullerton issued the ruling after hearing testimony that described the girl as profoundly traumatized.
Following his arrest, the North Bay Basketball Academy placed Huff on administrative leave, and the Novato Police Department continues to investigate the full scope of the alleged misconduct.
Huff’s next court appearance is scheduled for September 11 before Marin County Superior Court Judge Andrew Sweet, who will determine whether the case proceeds to trial.
The case has reignited discussions about safeguarding children in youth sports organizations across California, prompting calls for stricter oversight and background checks for coaches.
