Athletes Unlimited announced that it will suspend its professional volleyball circuit for the 2026 season and follow that with a pause in its basketball league during 2027.
The decision comes as the company seeks to concentrate its resources on the softball property, a platform that has already delivered an 181 percent jump in ESPN ratings during its second season.
Executives said the move is intended to build long‑term value for athletes, fans and commercial partners by aligning the business around a single, high‑growth property in the lead‑up to the 2028 Olympic Games.
Growth of the Softball Property
The softball league’s rating surge reflects a broader appetite for the format, positioning it as the centerpiece of Athletes Unlimited’s portfolio through 2027.
Company leaders noted that scheduling conflicts with the upcoming Olympics influenced the strategic realignment, a factor that also prompted the earlier shutdown of the lacrosse circuit in 2024.
While the company scales back two of its leagues, it is keeping an eye on emerging competitors such as LOVB, MLV and Unrivaled 3×3, which are gaining traction in the market.
Athletes Unlimited said it will use the softball league as its sole property in 2027, focusing on delivering a more cohesive experience for participants and viewers alike.
