Her mother, Žana Lelas, was not only a coach but also an Olympian who represented Yugoslavia and Croatia, earning a silver medal at the 1988 Summer Games in Seoul.

With encouragement from her father, she crossed the Atlantic, first to Idaho and then to Indiana, where she joined Purdue Fort Wayne under head coach Maria Marchesano, who herself had experienced loss, and mental performance coach Donovan Martin.
Fort Wayne quickly became more than a campus; it turned into a home where she built lasting relationships with Coach Kate Peterson Abiad, teammates, and a supportive community.
