Schedule Adjustments and Season Outlook
The Blue Devils entered the offseason with a nine‑game slate that was abruptly trimmed when Oberlin decided to cancel its entire football program. The cancellation left Wickliffe with only eight scheduled contests and a glaring hole in the opening week of the season.
Coach Marce Porcello has already secured a replacement for the vacated Week 3 slot, arranging a matchup at Toledo Woodward on September 4. However, the search for a true Week 1 opponent remains ongoing, as the team looks to complete a ten‑game schedule that will test their depth and stamina.
Despite the scheduling setbacks, the roster that returns is among the most experienced in recent memory. Quarterback Dominic Porcello, the coach’s son, will again anchor the offense, while the entire offensive line, featuring senior Nate Oboczky, comes back intact. Their familiarity with the system should provide a solid foundation for the upcoming campaign.
The team’s defensive outlook is equally promising, with a deep stable of running backs emerging after the departure of Elijah Fitch, who transferred to South. Though Fitch’s absence removes a key weapon, the coaching staff believes the new backs can maintain the ground game’s physicality.
Last season the Blue Devils finished 9‑3, falling in the second round of the playoffs to eventual state champion Kirtland. Their strong showing earned them favoritism in the Metro Division of the Chagrin Valley Conference, where they are expected to contend for the title once again.
