The University of Hawaii women's soccer squad, known as the Rainbow Wahine, made a memorable trip to Maui earlier this month, where they faced Seattle University's Redhawks in an exhibition match that stretched into a 15‑minute overtime.
The game was held at King Kekaulike High School in upcountry Maui and served not only as a test of skill but also as a backdrop for a series of community‑focused activities that honored the third anniversary of the Lahaina wildfires.
A Journey of Remembrance and Renewal
During the weekend the team visited Lahaina, laid lei at a memorial for the victims and took part in a keiki clinic that brought together local youngsters and the players in a spirit of mentorship.
Coach Michele Nagamine reflected on the experience, noting how the shared purpose strengthened bonds within the group and gave the squad a renewed sense of responsibility toward the community they represent.
After the Maui stop, the Rainbow Wahine will head back to Oahu to officially open their season, with their debut contest scheduled to air on KFVE on August 16th at 3:30 p.m. Hawaii time.
The upcoming broadcast marks a symbolic return to the islands after a period of reflection, as the team looks to carry forward the lessons learned from both the overtime battle and the memorial work.
