The Mountain Lakes High School football team, known as 'The Herd,' enters the new season with a clear ambition: to add another chapter to a storied playoff history. Currently ranked No. 10 in the Morris/Sussex Super 10, the squad blends tradition with a fresh drive to compete at the highest level.
Guiding the team is veteran head coach Darrell Fusco, whose long‑term presence has helped cultivate a tight‑knit senior class of more than twenty athletes. Many of these seniors have grown up together, participating in multiple sports and sharing friendships that date back to grade school, giving the program a rare sense of continuity.
The Herd’s pedigree is underscored by nine sectional championships, three of which arrived consecutively in 2023, and titles in 1974, 1976 and 2002. After reaching the sectional semifinal for the seventh straight year last fall with a 7‑3 record, the team now faces a challenging slate that includes rivals such as Madison, Ramsey and Cedar Grove, all of which advanced to the state finals a year ago. This season also marks the team’s move to the SFC American White Division, where it will test itself against larger schools as part of its strategy to sharpen playoff readiness.
Quarterback Lawson Fagan stands out as a key playmaker, having amassed 435 yards and seven touchdowns in the previous season. His experience and poise under pressure are expected to be pivotal as the team looks to build momentum heading into the postseason.
