Returning Stars Aim to Turn the Tide
The Western Illinois University football program is entering its third season under head coach Joe Davis with a roster that retains many of the key contributors who helped lay the foundation for recent growth.
Among them is sophomore quarterback Cason Carswell, who earned the Ohio Valley Conference Offensive Freshman of the Year last season and was voted a team captain, underscoring his leadership role.
Carswell said he chose to stay at WIU despite the lure of the transfer portal, citing the coach’s vision, the culture he has helped build, and the camaraderie among teammates.
Coach Davis has built his philosophy around mentorship and player‑driven leadership, emphasizing second chances and the belief that every practice is an opportunity to grow.
Last year the team fell in a series of one‑score games, a pattern that left the coaching staff and players yearning for a breakthrough.
This fall, the squad hopes to translate its offseason work into on‑field results, with Carswell expressing confidence that the team is ready to make a significant impact in the Ohio Valley Conference.
Fans and alumni are watching closely, hopeful that the combination of experienced leadership and a cohesive culture will finally turn those narrow defeats into victories.
