A night of contrast in Mexico City
The United States under-19 side fell 2-0 to Mexico in the final of the Concacaf U-20 Championship, a result that ended a three-tournament reign but still secured a place at next year’s FIFA U-20 World Cup and the Pan American Games.
Playing before a crowd of 36,000 at Estadio Azteca, the U.S. entered the match with a slim hope of defending their title, only to see Mexico dominate despite being reduced to ten men for much of the game.
The opening goal arrived from a set piece. Cristian Inda curled a free-kick that Carlos Hernandez headed toward the net, and Inda later redirected the ball home after a scramble. The effort was initially denied by the goalkeeper and midfielders, but a VAR review confirmed the ball had crossed the line.
Midway through the half, U.S. captain Chris Applewhite was shown a red card after a VAR-upheld decision reversed an earlier yellow card, stripping the Americans of a potential goal-scoring chance and further tilting the balance.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, the Americans created several clear opportunities. Jaidyn Contreras twice found himself one-on-one with the Mexican keeper, and Ruben Ramos missed a set-piece that could have levelled the score.
Mexico sealed the victory with a second strike from a corner. Inda’s delivery was met by Cristobal Alfaro, who finished clinically to make the final score 2-0.
The defeat marks the end of a dominant era for the U.S. team, which had captured three straight Concacaf U-20 titles in 2017, 2018 and 2022. Their runner-up finish nonetheless guarantees qualification for the 2027 World Cup and the Pan American Games, while also serving as a qualifier for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
Mexico’s triumph adds another chapter to their rivalry, highlighting the fine margins that decide high-stakes youth competitions.
