The Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) has rolled out a sweeping set of rule changes for the 2026 fall sports season, targeting volleyball, football and soccer in a bid to sharpen competition and protect athletes.
In volleyball, schools are now permitted to name up to two liberos per set, but only one may be on the court at any given time, and servers must keep their hands below shoulder level until the ball clears the net.
Football’s New Head‑Slap Enforcement
Football officials will now penalize both offensive and defensive players for any head‑slap contact, expanding the previous focus on defensive actions alone.
Soccer’s Goalkeeper Tweaks
Goalkeepers gain an additional two seconds to release the ball, with a corner kick awarded if they exceed the eight‑second threshold, and penalty‑kick encroachment will only be called when it demonstrably interferes with the kick.
MHSAA Director of Sports Operations explained that the adjustments aim to reduce injury risk, especially for younger liberos, while preserving the flow of play across all three sports.
The changes were unveiled on August 10, 2026, and will take effect for all high school teams beginning the first week of September.
