A Milestone Five Years in the Making
Rutgers’ field hockey program marked the fifth anniversary of its breakthrough 2021 season, a moment that still resonates across the university’s athletic landscape. The Scarlet Knights captured the Big Ten Tournament title, the first and only championship ever achieved by a Rutgers women’s team in any sport, cementing a historic milestone that still defines the program’s identity.
That season was more than a trophy; it was a statement. The Knights posted a program‑best 19 victories, including 13 wins over ranked opponents and a perfect sweep of Big Ten conference play. In a four‑day stretch at the end of the tournament, Rutgers knocked off Indiana, No. 7 Penn State and No. 2 Michigan, all on home turf in Piscataway, to claim the championship.
A Record Crowd and a Nationwide Stage
The championship game drew 1,617 spectators, the largest attendance recorded for any NCAA field hockey match that season, underscoring the growing enthusiasm for the sport in the region. The momentum carried into the national stage, where the Knights earned the No. 1 overall seed and advanced to the Elite Eight, proving that their success was not a flash in the pan.
Individual Accolades and Lasting Recognition
The accolades followed the team’s triumph. Four players earned All‑Big Ten honors, and the conference named Glatz its Co‑Player of the Year while awarding Kerrie Burns the Tournament MVP. Additional selections to the All‑Tournament Team and all‑region squads highlighted the depth of talent that defined the roster, with Milena Redlingshoefer, Liz Romano, Katie Larmour and others receiving first‑team recognition.
To commemorate the anniversary, the program scheduled a special weekend featuring a rematch against Michigan and a celebration of senior players during Letterwinner and Senior Day events. The gatherings not only honored past achievements but also signaled a continued commitment to building on that foundation of excellence.
