Born in Oceanside, California, Taylor honed his game at Clarkson University, where he served as team captain in his senior year. Over 149 collegiate appearances he developed a reputation for leadership, defensive acumen and a willingness to block shots, traits that have translated well to the professional level.
Before his collegiate career, Taylor spent a season with the Corpus Christi IceRays of the North American Hockey League, gaining experience in a competitive junior environment. He later joined the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the United States Hockey League, appearing in 105 games across two seasons and alternating as an alternate captain during the 2019‑20 campaign.
