During a routine practice session at Maumelle High School, coaches were startled when a two‑foot cottonmouth snake slithered out from beneath a player's helmet.
The serpent, identified as a cottonmouth — the second most venomous snake native to Arkansas — had been concealed inside the helmet's padding for roughly an hour before it was uncovered.
Athletic Director Kirk Horton, who has spent decades in Arkansas sports, described the scene as unprecedented, noting that he had never before encountered a snake in a football helmet.
A Venomous Surprise
Animal control officers from Maumelle Animal Services responded quickly, employing a technique of submerging the helmet in a sink to coax the reptile out without harming it.
After the snake was safely captured, officials released it into a nearby forested area, aiming to keep it away from the school grounds and prevent future encounters.
The discovery prompted a review of equipment storage policies, though no injuries were reported and the team resumed normal practice later that day.
While the incident was brief, it underscored the hidden risks that can accompany everyday athletic gear, reminding schools to conduct thorough inspections before each session.
