The university announced on August 10 that Kermit Davis Sr., a pillar of Mississippi State basketball, had died at the age of 91. The news was met with an outpouring of tributes from former players, colleagues, and fans who remembered his indelible impact on the sport.
Davis first rose to prominence as a standout at Walnut High School before enrolling at Mississippi State, where he played from 1956 to 1959. As team captain of the 1958‑59 squad, he guided the Bulldogs to their first SEC regular‑season championship and a No. 3 finish in the AP poll, a milestone that remains a touchstone in the program’s history.
After stints coaching high school teams in Leakesville, Tupelo, and Starkville, Davis returned to his alma mater in 1970 as head coach. Over seven seasons he compiled a 91‑91 record and earned SEC Coach of the Year honors in 1971, cementing his reputation as a steadying force during a transitional era for the program.
Beyond the X’s and O’s, Davis contributed to the university’s athletic development as associate director of the Bulldog Club from 1980 to 1990, helping secure resources that would benefit future generations of student‑athletes.
Family, Mentorship, and Lasting Influence
Davis is survived by his son, Kermit Davis Jr., who carved out his own coaching career, notably leading Ole Miss from 2018 through 2023. The father‑son duo exemplifies a deep-rooted basketball lineage that stretches across Mississippi’s sporting landscape.
In recognition of his contributions, Davis was inducted into both the M‑Club Hall of Fame and the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame, honors that join a legacy defined by championship success, mentorship, and an unwavering commitment to the university.
