Michigan State University’s hockey program has landed a highly coveted commitment from Ethan Belchetz, an 18‑year‑old left winger who has dominated the Ontario Hockey League this season.
A Promising Arrival
Belchetz recorded 34 goals and 25 assists for a total of 59 points in 57 games with the Windsor Spitfires, a performance that has placed him among the top prospects for the upcoming NHL Draft.
Scouting services project the forward as a first‑round selection, with some analysts speculating he could be taken as high as the top ten picks.
The prospect hails from Oakville, Ontario, Canada, where he developed his game before joining the Spitfires.
A Deepening Roster
He will join a Michigan State roster that returns veterans such as Anthony Romani, Gavin O'Connell and Tommi Mannisto, all of whom are expected to contribute on the left wing.
In addition, Arizona State transfer Cullen Potter, a left‑handed shooter, adds depth to the wing position, while defenseman Chase Reid, forward Nikita Klepov and center Jack Hextall round out a class that could feature multiple first‑round talents.
Coaching Ambitions
Head coach Adam Nightingale, who has guided the Spartans through three consecutive NCAA Tournament heartbreaks, believes this incoming group finally gives the team the depth needed to break through.
Nightingale noted that the program’s recent playoff disappointments have created a sense of urgency, and the new recruits are viewed as the catalyst for ending the streak.
The excitement is amplified by the Central Scouting Bureau’s ranking, which lists Belchetz as the No. 9 North American skater in this year’s draft class.
With the combination of elite draft prospects and experienced returnees, Michigan State hopes to translate its recruiting success into a Frozen Four appearance and perhaps its first national championship in decades.
