The Iowa baseball landscape is set for change as two longtime mentors step aside. Duncan Patterson, who guided Council Bluffs St. Albert to a Class 1A state title in 2021, has resigned after a season that ended 8-29. Casey Bryant, a coach with 28 years at Western Dubuque, also announced his retirement, citing a desire to travel more freely.
A Legacy of Success
Patterson’s championship came after a career that produced 208 victories and 151 defeats, a record that placed him among the state’s most successful mentors. Under his guidance the Falcons captured the 2020 and 2021 tournament berths and posted seven consecutive winning seasons. This year the team will return key contributors such as Kaizen Nadgwick, who batted .469, and Brek Gentile, both expected to anchor the lineup.
Bryant’s departure follows two consecutive state championships in 2022 and 2023 and a title‑game appearance a decade earlier. His 671‑370 record reflects a sustained excellence that includes multiple district triumphs. The Bobcats will also welcome back standouts like Adler Gibbs and a player known simply as Rissman, who posted a .448 average with 58 RBI last season.
With the departures, both schools face the task of filling leadership voids while preserving the momentum built over recent years. Athletic directors are already scouting replacements, and the returning talent provides a foundation for competitive campaigns in the coming season.
