A New Chapter for the Chinese Professional Baseball League
The summer season will open on August 13, featuring six clubs, two of which are newcomers Shanghai Orcas and Changsha Want Want, expanding from the original four teams that started in 2023.
The ambition is to achieve full professional status by 2028, a goal that drives the recruitment of overseas talent, especially a cohort of eleven Cuban players who have begun to shape the competition.
Cuban Influence and International Reach
Among the imports, Alfredo Despaigne stands out as a Cuban legend, celebrated for his World Baseball Classic record of seven home runs, and having previously showcased his skills in Japan and the United States.
Joining him is Yasiel González, who earned MVP honors in both the Cuban National Series and the Cuban Elite League in the same year, posting a 1.227 OPS in the latter, and now brings that power to the Beijing CP Loongs and Xiamen Dolphins.
Pitcher Frank Herrera, another Cuban arm, has posted a 2.95 ERA in Italy this season and earlier represented Cuba at the Central American and Caribbean Games, adding depth to the pitching staff.
The postseason is slated to commence on September 21, with a best‑of‑three final scheduled for September 26, a timeline that follows the league’s inaugural championship in February, when the Shenzhen Blue Sox defeated the Shanghai Dragons in a three‑game series.
That inaugural title also marked a relocation, as the Shanghai Dragons moved to Beijing and rebranded as the Beijing CP Loongs, illustrating the fluidity of team identities as the league evolves.
With the new teams now part of the landscape, the competition promises a blend of domestic talent and international flair, setting the stage for a future where the CPBL aims to be a fully professional league by the end of the decade.
