The championship picture tightens
The NASCAR Cup Series championship picture is tightening as the season’s final stretch approaches, with only a handful of races left to lock in the playoff field and the stakes growing with each green flag.
Denny Hamlin leads the standings with 923 points, holding a 103‑point edge over Ty Gibbs, while Erik Jones, currently 18th, fights to stay within reach of the final Chase berth after a late‑race crash at Iowa Speedway dropped him to 20th and left him 50 points behind Austin Cindric.
The point reset after the Aug. 29 Daytona finale will give the top 16 a fresh slate, and the champion will start The Chase with 2,100 points, making each remaining race a decisive moment for seeding and momentum.
Tyler Reddick’s crash that eliminated Jones also reshaped the leaderboard, allowing Ross Chastain to climb to 18th, while Chase Briscoe surged to fifth with 663 points, four ahead of Christopher Bell, and Kyle Larson fell to 10th after a 33rd‑place finish.
Ryan Blaney highlighted the razor‑thin margins between sixth and eleventh place, noting that a handful of points can swing fortunes, and Ryan Preece sits just below the cutline at 497 points, needing a win to force his way into the playoffs.
