A grassroots movement on the ice
Every Monday night the Bayou Women’s Hockey Association transforms the rink at Planet Ice in Lafayette into a welcoming arena for women of all ages and skill levels, offering structured stick‑and‑puck sessions that emphasize fun, safety and progressive skill development.
Taylor Gage, the association’s president and founder, describes these sessions as the heartbeat of the league, recalling the thrill of a child’s first goal and the pride of a newcomer mastering a pass. She highlights the moments when a shy participant finally joins a drill and discovers a new confidence on the ice.
Courtney Dugas, the team’s captain, first laced up skates at age ten, inspired by the former ECHL Lafayette IceGators, and now pays that inspiration forward by guiding beginners through drills, offering mentorship and celebrating each small victory as a building block for long‑term participation.
Beyond the sport, BWHA promotes cardiovascular health, regular exercise and a strong sense of community, encouraging any woman who wants to try hockey to join a session and experience the rush of gliding across the ice while building lasting friendships.
