The Duluth school district launched an external review of complaints aimed at Denfeld High School boys hockey coach Dale Jago, seeking to determine whether any misconduct warranted disciplinary action.
That review, which featured testimony from more than a dozen witnesses, concluded without recommending any punishment, a finding that initially satisfied many within the community.
A misstep in the initial inquiry
However, district officials later indicated that new information had emerged, prompting them to consider a follow‑up interview with Jago to explore the additional details.
The allegations examined by the outside investigator matched exactly those that had previously been examined by Denfeld’s own administration, underscoring the consistency of the concerns raised.
Superintendent John Magas publicly apologized to a complainant who had inadvertently been omitted from the original fact‑finding process, acknowledging the oversight.
Despite the outpouring of support for the coach, the district announced that Jago’s contract would not be renewed, a decision that affected the team’s roster and performance.
The Hunters finished the 2025‑2026 season with an 8‑16‑2 record, and the upcoming campaign will open with a matchup against Brainerd on December 5 at the Essentia Duluth Heritage Sports Center.
The case has sparked a broader conversation about accountability, transparency and the role of external investigations in school sports governance.
