Northwestern’s field hockey team has cemented its place in college sports history, securing its second straight national championship with a 22‑1 record and an overtime winner against Princeton.
The making of a dynasty
At the heart of the triumph is Maddie Zimmer, a midfielder whose name has become synonymous with excellence in the program. A two‑time NFHCA National Player of the Year and three‑time NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player, Zimmer helped the Wildcats to three titles in five seasons.
The championship game unfolded in dramatic fashion, with Ilse Tromp’s decisive goal in overtime sealing a 22‑1 finish. The Wildcats’ only blemish came against the same Tigers earlier in the season, a loss that only sharpened their resolve.
Departures and the next wave of talent
The squad will say goodbye to key contributors such as forward Grace Schulze, who amassed 36 points this season, and defenders Aerin Krys and Maja Zivojnovic. Their departures open space for rising seniors Ashley Sessa, Olivia Bent‑Cole and Piper Borz, each of whom recorded at least six goals in 2025.
Defender Ilse Tromp emerged as the team’s offensive catalyst, leading all scorers with 15 goals and six game‑winning strikes. In goal, first‑year Juliana Boon earned Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year honors with 10 shutouts and just 18 goals allowed in 23 appearances.
Coach Kelly Amonte Hiller also announced the addition of newcomers, including lacrosse transfer Maddie Epke and midfielders Jessica Freedman, Anna Arnold, Montgomery Ferguson and Kiera Sack, as well as defender Eleanor Evarts, who will bolster the roster for the upcoming campaign.
Looking ahead
The Wildcats open the 2026 schedule with high‑profile matchups against Duke on September 4, Miami (Ohio) on September 13 and Iowa on October 9, before a much‑anticipated rematch with Princeton on October 11. With a blend of seasoned leaders and fresh talent, Northwestern looks to defend its crown and extend its reign at the top of collegiate field hockey.
