A high school hockey player in Winnipeg has been found guilty of sexualized hazing that involved spanking rookie teammates and organizing initiation rituals in hotel rooms.
The investigation uncovered a so‑called ‘sex kit’ that the player had purchased and displayed, as well as threats of violence directed at teammates who resisted the rituals.
Arbitrator Upholds Lengthy Suspension
An independent arbitrator reviewed the case after the player appealed a four‑year‑nine‑month suspension imposed by Hockey Canada, and confirmed that the severity of the misconduct warranted the penalty.
The suspension, which began with an interim ban in March 2024 and was later extended by an additional three‑year term in December 2024, bars the athlete from any Hockey Canada‑sanctioned activity, including attending games, until 2028.
Zero‑Tolerance Approach
The decision emphasized that the player’s age and any attempts at restorative programming were not factors in the final ruling, underscoring the league’s zero‑tolerance stance on such behavior.
Hockey Canada’s response reflects a broader effort to protect young athletes and reshape the culture of junior hockey, signaling that violations of this nature will result in long‑term exclusion from the sport.
