A perfect group run
At the heart of the victory was forward Eveline Toyounon, whose 11 points, 12 rebounds and two assists not only anchored the team’s interior play but also earned her the game’s highest efficiency rating of 16.
Tunisia struck first, taking the opening quarter 15-11, but Cameroon answered in the second with a narrow 11-10 edge, setting the stage for a tightly contested contest.
The turning point arrived in the third quarter when a late defensive rebound by Charlene Poliwa sparked a surge, allowing Cameroon to pull ahead in a low-scoring battle.
Building on that momentum, Maria Messina converted two free throws after a foul and Yvana Bella added a quick two points, extending the lead to nine and shifting the rhythm in Cameroon’s favor.
In the fourth quarter Cameroon exercised clock control, outscoring Tunisia 21-14 to seal a 61-51 final margin and underscore their dominance.
Coach Ange Lonteu praised Tunisia’s second-half adjustments while highlighting his squad’s resilience, and he warned that the team will need to stay sharp as they head into the quarterfinals as the top seed.
