The University of Southern Mississippi announced that three former standouts — offensive linemen Aloali'i Maui and Greg Nunnery and defensive lineman Jameer Lewis — have been cleared by a U.S. District Court to return for the 2026 campaign, a development that could reshape the team’s outlook heading into the season opener.
Court Decision Clears Path for Key Additions
All three athletes completed their academic requirements in 2025, did not redshirt and have not signed professional contracts, which made them eligible under the court’s preliminary injunction that blocks the NCAA’s attempt to overturn the ruling.
Maui, who started ten games at right guard last season, and Nunnery, a versatile starter who appeared in twelve games with nine at left guard and three at left tackle, bring a combined 22 starting experiences to an offensive line that otherwise returns only one regular, senior Broderick Roman.
Lewis adds a proven pass‑rush threat, having posted 32 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss and five sacks in 2025, a level of production that contrasts with the otherwise youthful defensive front the Eagles will field.
Coaches have said the trio will report to practice on August 17, but their actual playing time will depend on health assessments and the coaching staff’s evaluation of readiness before the first game.
The Golden Eagles open the season on September 5 at M.M. Roberts Stadium in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, hosting Alcorn State in a matchup that will be streamed on ESPN+ at 4 p.m. Central Time.
Despite the optimism, the NCAA has filed an appeal of the injunction, meaning the eligibility of Maui, Nunnery and Lewis remains provisional and could be revoked if the appeal succeeds.
Southern Miss enters the 2026 season ranked among the nation’s least experienced rosters, making the return of these veterans a critical factor for a team hoping to compete early in the schedule.
