A morning practice at Maumelle High School in Arkansas took a startling turn when a football player reached into his helmet and felt something unexpected.
An Unexpected Guest
The creature, identified as a cottonmouth, measured roughly two feet in length and had taken shelter under the padding of the helmet for about an hour before anyone noticed.
Coaches were alerted immediately, and with the help of the player they located the reptile and removed it from the equipment to prevent a potential bite.

Chris Davis, director of Maumelle Animal Services, said the incident was unlike anything he had encountered in his career, noting that snakes have previously been found in such odd places but never inside a piece of sports gear.
The player escaped injury, and animal control officials confirmed that the snake was safely relocated, underscoring the importance of vigilance during outdoor activities.
