Red River Soccer Prepares for a Promising Season

A look at the returning talent, new leadership and ambitions of the Grand Forks team

Red River Soccer Looks to Build on Last Season’s Momentum

The Grand Forks Red River soccer program is entering the new season with a wealth of experience, having finished as state runners‑up the previous year. A core group of eight starters returns, seven of whom are seniors, giving the squad a solid foundation as they look to improve on last year’s results.

Among the returning standouts is senior midfielder James Schindler, who earned All‑Eastern Dakota Conference honors and was also recognized on the North Dakota Division AA all‑state basketball team. Schindler’s dual‑sport achievements highlight his versatility and drive, as he aims to add a first‑team all‑state soccer nod and increase his goal tally.

Joining him is Mory Camara, the only other returning All‑Eastern Dakota Conference player, known for his scoring ability and knack for creating chances for teammates. Their leadership will be pivotal as the team navigates a challenging schedule.

Head coach Brian Gutierrez, who previously guided the girls’ soccer team to a third‑place finish in his debut season, brings a fresh philosophy centered on daily progress rather than immediate postseason glory. He emphasizes phases of play and teamwork, encouraging the veterans to mentor the younger players.

The squad’s recent run included upsets over top seeds Bismarck Legacy and West Fargo Sheyenne, culminating in a 2‑0 loss to Fargo South in the championship game. Despite the defeat, the experience has bolstered confidence and forged a tighter chemistry within the group.

Gutierrez notes that the team’s improved work ethic and collective focus on incremental growth are already evident in training sessions, setting the stage for a season that could see them contend for top honors.
