A Close Call on the Field
During a routine practice session at a high school in Arkansas, a venomous cottonmouth snake slithered into the helmet of a football player, startling coaches and teammates who were nearby.
Maumelle Animal Services was dispatched to the scene, where officials confirmed the reptile was a cottonmouth, a species notorious for its potent venom and its habit of seeking dark, sheltered spaces.
Rather than attempting a direct capture, officers employed a flooding technique to coax the snake out of the helmet's padding, a method that allowed them to retrieve the animal safely without harming either the snake or the athlete.
The player emerged unscathed, avoiding a potential bite that could have required emergency medical attention, and the snake was subsequently relocated to a suitable habitat away from the campus.
Chris Davis, director of Maumelle Animal Services, noted that this was the first time he had encountered a snake inside sports equipment, underscoring how rarely such incidents occur but also how vigilant staff must remain.
Authorities have used the episode to remind athletes and coaches to inspect helmets, pads and other gear before use, especially in regions where venomous snakes are common, to prevent future close calls.
