A milestone season begins
Vanderbilt University’s women’s soccer program enters the 2026‑27 campaign ranked fifth in the United Soccer Coaches and TopDrawerSoccer polls, a testament to the groundwork laid over the past two seasons.
The debut will be historic: the Commodores will host SMU in the first ever ticketed match in program history, scheduled for August 12 at 6 p.m. CT at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex in Nashville, Tennessee.
A potent attack returns with senior forwards Sydney Watts and Courtney Jones, who combined for 16 goals and three assists, and seven goals and five assists respectively, and were both named to the United Soccer Coaches Hermann Trophy Preseason Players to Watch List.
The offensive lineup also welcomes transfers Megan Hinnenkamp, the 2023 SEC Co‑Freshman of the Year, and former SMU captain Lydia Ungashick, who brings 34 consecutive starts from the ACC side.
Adding depth in goal, Layla Armas, a former UCLA starter, will don the Vanderbilt colors after arriving in May 2026, bolstering a backline that already protected the net with a strong defensive core.
Coach Darren Ambrose, now in his third season, will chase his 127th career win, a milestone that would eclipse former coach Ken McDonald’s 126 victories, underscoring the program’s steady ascent.
The Commodores’ home dominance continues, having posted a 33‑5‑8 record at home since 2022 and an 11‑1‑1 mark in 2025, a trend that fans hope will carry into the new season.
Beyond the roster, the matchup pits Vanderbilt’s 79.6% retention of 2025 points — the third‑highest return among preseason top‑15 teams — against SMU’s 2025 offensive output of 245 shots and 25 goals, the most under head coach Nicole Nelson since 2019.
The game will also be part of a broader series history that sees Vanderbilt holding a favorable edge, while the SEC preseason watch list includes five Commodores — Ally Bollig‑Agu, Courtney Jones, Reagan Pentz, Olivia Stafford and Sydney Watts — highlighting the conference’s depth.
