Cerrato Joins Hurricanes on Multi-Year Deal
Charlie Cerrato, the former Penn State forward who dominated the Big Ten as a rookie, has officially signed a three-year agreement with the Carolina Hurricanes. The deal marks a swift transition from college hockey to the NHL for the 23-year-old, who was previously evaluated on a professional tryout basis with the Chicago Wolves.
Cerrato’s collegiate career was punctuated by a 27-point outburst in 23 games during the 2025-26 season, a performance that placed him atop the conference’s rookie leaders in goals, assists and points. An undisclosed injury limited his participation for much of that campaign, but the Hurricanes see enough upside to lock him in for the next three years.
Financial Details and Incentives
If Cerrato remains on the NHL roster for the 2025-26 season, he will earn a base salary of $775,000, complemented by a signing bonus of $220,000. The contract also contains performance-linked compensation that varies according to the level at which he competes, providing flexibility for both the player and the franchise.
The Hurricanes’ management praised Cerrato’s work ethic and offensive instincts, noting that his skill set aligns with the team’s evolving forward group. General manager Don Waddell emphasized that the agreement reflects the club’s commitment to nurturing talent that can contribute immediately while still developing under the organization’s guidance.
Looking Ahead
Cerrato is slated to report to the Hurricanes’ training camp later this summer, where he will compete for a roster spot alongside established veterans and prospects. While the final assignment — whether in the NHL or the AHL — remains undecided, the player expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity to prove himself at the highest level.
