A Hidden Threat in Unexpected Places
Initial reports suggested the reptile might have been a copperhead, but officials later confirmed it was a cottonmouth, commonly known as a water moccasin. The snake had slipped into the helmet's padding, making extraction a delicate operation that required flooding the enclosure to coax the creature out.
Chris Davis, director of Maumelle Animal Services, described the scene as unprecedented, noting that he had never encountered a snake inside a sports helmet before. "It was a first for all of us," he said, emphasizing the rarity of the incident.
The cottonmouth ranks as the second most venomous snake native to Arkansas, trailing only the rattlesnake in toxicity. While the player escaped without a bite, the potential danger underscored the seriousness of the find.
