The 2026 women's soccer campaign for the SIUE Cougars kicked off with a much‑anticipated matchup against Alabama A&M in Huntsville, Alabama, on Wednesday at 3 p.m. The opening game marks the first test for a squad that blends youthful energy with a depth of experience.
A Promising Start
Head coach Derek Burton, now in his 19th season at the helm, emphasized the team's preparedness despite its relatively young roster. "We have a solid foundation and a lot of talent coming in," Burton said, highlighting the work of his coaching staff in shaping a competitive side.
Senior goalkeeper Sarah Bozeman, the reigning Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year, returns as team captain. Bozeman posted four shutouts and 104 saves in conference play last season, and her leadership will be pivotal between the posts.
The defensive line will be anchored by senior defender Taylor Babb, who will sit directly behind Bozeman. Complementing her are transfers Ashley Molinari and the emerging duo of Anna Zichella, Maya Gaines and Kate Gleeson, all of whom are expected to bolster the backline.
Midfield options are plentiful, with Carson Bohnenstiehl slated to provide box‑to‑box dynamism, while Olivia Watt, Marin Vines, Ava Lewis, Sammy Williams, Imogene Joseph and Mckenna Wigfield battle for starting spots.
