A Summer of Transformation
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s women’s basketball program entered the summer with a clear vision: to translate offseason work into on‑court dominance. Head coach Lane Lord, now in his third year, called the incoming roster the most talented group he has assembled in nearly a decade, setting the tone for a campaign that could redefine the Vaqueros’ trajectory.
The team’s training regimen centered on three pillars — speed, strength, and tactical mastery. By integrating new conditioning protocols and installing an aggressive offensive scheme alongside a disciplined defensive framework, the Vaqueros accelerated their learning curve, refining details that typically take an entire season to iron out.
Speed, Strength, and System
Associate coach Danny Hughes contributed fresh drill concepts that emphasized quick transitions and perimeter shooting, while also guiding players through individualized strength programs. The result was a noticeable jump in athleticism and basketball IQ across the squad.
The chemistry forged during those grueling weeks translated into a winning mindset that carried into the fall schedule. The Vaqueros posted their best record in program history, capturing a postseason berth and finishing fourth in the Southland Conference — milestones that seemed unattainable just months earlier.
Key Contributors
Among the standouts, redshirt senior Erin Maguire emerged as a vocal leader, her confidence swelling after a series of dominant performances in scrimmages. Freshmen Madison Huhn, Gianna Angiolet and Chazlyn Dettor embraced the challenge, setting high expectations from day one and pushing teammates to match their intensity.
Beyond statistics, the players spoke of a camaraderie that persisted long after practice ended, a bond that coach Lord believes will be the foundation for sustained success. ‘We’re not just building a team; we’re building a culture,’ he said, underscoring the collective determination that now defines the program.
