A Homecoming for a Rising Defenseman
The Rapid City Rush, the ECHL franchise that serves as a feeder for the Calgary Flames, announced the addition of defenseman Ben Wozney for the upcoming 2026‑27 campaign. The move signals the team's intent to reinforce its blue‑line with a player who has already proven his ability to generate offense from the back end.
Wozney spent the previous season in France’s top division with Nantes, where he topped the league’s defensemen with 15 points in 30 games. His performance there not only highlighted his offensive instincts but also earned him the distinction of being the club’s highest‑scoring blue‑liner.
A graduate of Bowling Green State University, the 25‑year‑old compiled 34 points — five goals and 29 assists — over 130 collegiate appearances across four seasons. That collegiate production placed him among the most reliable offensive contributors among defensemen in the program’s recent history.
His return to North American professional hockey marks the first step of a pro career after a stint abroad. The Rush hope his blend of size, skating and playmaking will add depth and stability to a defensive corps that has been seeking a spark.
What This Means for the Rush
The organization views the signing as a strategic move to blend youthful talent with veteran savvy, aiming to climb the league standings and secure a playoff berth. By integrating a player who has already tested himself on the international stage, the Rush hope to translate that experience into a competitive edge within the ECHL.
