Cottonmouth Snake Discovered in High School Football Helmet

Incident at Maumelle High School Highlights Wildlife Risks in Sports

A Venomous Intruder on the Field

During a routine practice session at Maumelle High School, coaches and teammates were startled by an unexpected visitor tucked inside a player's helmet.

The reptile, identified by animal control as a cottonmouth, had slipped into the padding of the protective gear, evading immediate notice.

Chris Davis, director of Maumelle Animal Services, arrived on scene and described the scene as unprecedented, noting that he had never encountered a snake inside sports equipment before.

After careful extraction, which involved flooding the helmet to coax the creature out, the snake was safely captured and later rehomed.

Authorities emphasized that the cottonmouth ranks as the second most venomous snake in Arkansas, trailing only the rattlesnake, and that a bite could have been fatal.

The incident has prompted a review of safety protocols at local facilities, with officials urging vigilance against unexpected wildlife intrusions.
