Season Opener Sets the Stage
The Northern Illinois University women's soccer team will open its 2026 campaign on Wednesday, August 12, when it hosts Illinois State University at 7 p.m. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+, giving fans an early glimpse of a squad that is eager to make an impression in its inaugural Horizon League season.
Following the opener, the Huskies travel to face DePaul on August 16 and return home to take on Northern Iowa on August 23, marking the first home game of the year. These non‑conference fixtures form part of a six‑game stretch that Coach Michael O’Neill says is crucial for establishing the team’s identity and competitive standards.
Building Identity on the Field
Coach O’Neill emphasizes that the early schedule is less about results and more about instilling a collective mindset. With 17 returning players, including three of last season’s top goal scorers — Julianna Hill, Jordin Kadiri and Lauren Mrugala — the coaching staff believes continuity will blend smoothly with the influx of new talent.
New Faces and Transfers
The roster also welcomes ten newcomers, comprising six freshmen and four transfers. Among them, Colorado State alum Taite DeLange arrives after a three‑goal season with the Rams, while Peyton Cornejo from Green Bay and Genevieve Wilson from Milwaukee bring Horizon League experience to the mix. Five additional players joined in January, and the remaining five freshmen set foot on campus on July 15, ready to contribute from day one.
Milwaukee enters the season as the defending Horizon League champion and the preseason favorite in the Under Armour poll, projecting NIU to finish seventh. As the Huskies embark on their first year in the league, the challenge will be to translate early‑season growth into competitive performances against a conference that has dominated the landscape in recent years.
